Today marks the anniversary of Matthew Shepard’s death. His story reminds us of the deadly impact of hate toward the LGBTQ+ community. His life inspired change and led to the Matthew Shepard and James Byrd Jr. Hate Crimes Prevention Act.
To every member of Congress and every supporter of any political party, it is time to stop using religion or politics as a weapon against LGBTQ+ people. Equality cannot be taken away or limited. Freedom of religion does not mean freedom to discriminate.
True leadership means protecting every American, whether they are gay, straight, transgender, deaf, or disabled. Hate has no place in our laws, our communities, or our hearts.
We remember Matthew Shepard by standing for love, compassion, and equal rights for all people.
